Welcome to our blog and I hope you find it useful and interesting at the same time. I’m Matt and my wife is April.

We are a UK – RP family which is setting up in the Philippines although rely on me working in the UK months at a time to get where we want to be in life. But at the same time we are developing ventures in the Philippines. We hope you find the information you require within this blog. The idea is that I will add information regularly adding things to see and do, points of interests, business ideas, important facts etc. Which should give a wide range of information which will make your retirement/stay more enjoyable and better informed. Please be a part of the discussions on the topics posting questions, answers and experiences. It helps people get a broader picture of the hotels, locations and experiences.

Enjoy your stay and if you want any information please feel free to ask on thing you may find very useful is the forums over at

www.tropicalpenpals.com/forum

In the Philippines in the time I have been here I have come to realise that there is a lot of expats who are just retired and looking to enjoy the rest of the years who are generally a nice bunch (but avoid politics) , the new breed which are the type of myself arriving which there are still in short supply who are wanting to live here full-time and developing towards that either living half in the West half in the Philippines or already took the jump into the unknown completely. The final category is the ones you have to be aware of they are your best new buddy but a lot of these people are out to make money off your back in some form. Some have been here years others months but the only real advice I can give is don’t pay anyone anything unless you know its genuine. Avoid investments unless you are prepared to take loses (many recently did with the Legacy scandal) Property is also something never rush to buy and certainly not within a short time of being here because there are a lot of pitfalls and complications that only people who have been there can share. Either way USE but don’t ABUSE the forums I don’t have all the answers but someone will no doubt reply to a question that you will find helpful.

Another thing people ask about is rentals and buying cars, property, diving gear, airsoft equipment and many other things.. want to know  the best place to look?? The FREE Classifieds don’t buy new unless you REALLY are sure your going to keep doing it.. I looked at an automatic rifle for Airsoft store price was P9,000 I bought second hand with upgrades for P4,000 (also came with ammunition and a strap things you don’t get in store).

Anyway funny enough we also own a website that hosts free ads and your welcome to use it also.. that’s at :-

cebuAd

Membership is pretty straight forward and its all free I don’t sell your information infact you don’t even need to fill most of it in on registration as I switched most of the features off so people can cut and past info rather than get bogged down in a 20minute write up of state, city, address, telephone etc..

Either way there is plenty on there much is added by users daily and i also trawl the net and have people upload data to keep it churning so there is always a lot going on.

Most important just enjoy yourself and if you get to Cebu drop by and say hi!

Or if you prefer via email matt_wilkie@hotmail.co.uk

Hi Matt, so glad i found your website, strated to read a few things to gather info and found much more than i expected, its a wicked site ! and you help and advice is somenting you cant read in a book, nice one !!, anyway to my point, I'm knocking on a bit (49) cut a long stort short, met a girl, likes alot and the feeling is mutual, rocky start but now we both know what we want, visited her there in cebu last november, had a fantastic time not all sex and booze as many do, just spent time getting to know each other, fell totally in love with cebu, after comeing back home here to wales i realized thats where i want to spend my life, just loved it so much, the people, the culture the food, i was a bit aprehensive at first, so many terror stories about rip off merchants and the like, well i'm happy to say its not all true ! well i liked it so much i have decided to spend my time there in december this year and try and build a small business, not sure if this is the place to discuss what i want to say or indeed even if your even interested, but your lifstyle (the simple life appeals to me) i can adapt and i will adapt and any advice that you can give will be truly appreciated m8, please let me know if i can write yoiu again before i go OTT. cheers I'm steve by the way from Wales, have case and flag even the air ticket for 6 mths trial lol.
  • Hi Steve,
Glad you like TP :) I think the advantage of the blog is its continously evolving where a book is often out of date the minute its published. I see a lot of E-books online for sale about the Philippines and even bought a couple to find that what I thought was true. They weren't worth the time to read through most of the data is 10years old or very vague at best. TP although directed mainly at Cebu (because of our location) as I travel around i add in new parts of the blog at the same time to keep developing it.

Anyway back to you..lol I would advise dropping me an email to Matt_wilkie@hotmail.co.uk for private mail simply because there is too much topics to discuss in one posting also this page isn't designed for Q+A just advice requests.. I think you would love it here just the initial setup and realistic budgeting is the important factors to an easy life..

    Hi Matt,

your web project is a really interesting story. Specially interested in the development of your UK-Filipino ties.
If you want to stay updated on official UK projects here in the Philippines, why don't you join the UK Embassy Manila's facebook page.

    Thanks and all the best
  • Hi Ronald,
