This is something many should think about as I know of several people who own firearms around the Philippines most of which are illegal because of the Philippines law banning the owning of firearms for foreign nationals and the areas they reside leave them open to high risk robberies and theft. I am also aware the average person has no interest in guns but for P1,000 you can generally find a pistol from a local source as simply there is very little done to stop the manufacturing of illegal firearms in the Philippines. Often custom made illegal guns are being manufactured for politicians so unlikely to interfere in factories that produce arms. At the same time calibration and machining isn’t to the same standard of original firearms. As well as the fact in most shoot outs due to a lack of training on both criminal and police side (as bullets seem to be rather expensive to be wasting on training) its normally bystanders that fall victim.
Anyway back on tangent this morning one of our workers received news that her brother who’s already served 1 year in prison while awaiting trial is now sentenced to another 7 years for possession of an illegal firearm. Although the gun was neither his or used by himself it was in his possession at the time of the police search. Something to be aware of when thinking about gun ownership.
If you are looking to own a firearm the legal way to go about this is having your wife own one and also carry out the basic training that is part of the permit. At the same time she is the only one allowed to carry the gun inside the home a policeman recently advised me that “anyone inside the home can use it in self defence”. Which I am not offering up a guaranteed safe passage if you shoot someone as anything as serious as this requires checking with a lawyer. But this was from a police officer who at the time was advising me to buy a firearm for home use.
