The Philippines top the U.N’s disaster league list above any other country with 33 major incidents that affected 12.5 percent of the Philippines population. Tropical storm “Sendong,” which claimed over 1,430 lives was a major reason due to being the second largest natural disaster in 2011. After the Philippines on the list came China, the United States, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Guatemala, Japan, Brazil, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Peru, Thailand and Vietnam. Although no country is safe from natural disasters the damage limitation by preparations and awareness are major factors that the Philippines still lags miles behind with. With current climate issues increasing natural disasters are more likely to increase rather than decrease. Typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” showed how badly prepared the Philippines is for tropical storms when they devastated Metro Manila causing mass flooding and losses of life. Even basic things such as evacuations showed lack of preparedness and an inability to be completed quickly.
The Philippines however is experiencing its dry spell and the wet months are falling far from people’s minds yet its now things should be getting prepared for the end of years rainy season. Yet another set of disasters waiting to happen.
